Sarina State School’s Head of Special Education Services (HoSES) coordinates a special education program (SEP) dedicated to supporting the educational needs of students in one or more verified disability areas at five locations across the Sarina region.

Education Queensland supports students with a range of disabilities including:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Intellectual Disability (ID)
  • Hearing Impairment (HI)
  • Physical Impairment (PI)
  • Vision Impairment (VI)
  • Speech Language Impairment (SLI)

The Sarina State School SEP program provides specialised support to students who live in the Sarina School catchment area.  Students who live outside of our enrolment catchment should enrol at their local primary school who will have similar support services available for all students with disabilities.

Sarina State School SEP also coordinates a range of specialist support services from Education Queensland and outside agencies including Advisory visiting teachers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech language pathologists.

All students with disabilities attend mainstream classes with their peers, with some students withdrawn for intensive English and Maths support lessons with SEP teachers at regular times throughout the week. On a daily basis, students are supported in small groups within their classroom by SEP staff. Some students also receive support to access specialist lessons such as music, physical education and speech programs.

Staff based in the SEP work closely with class teachers to differentiate planning, adjust assessment tasks and provide appropriate resources to assist the student to access an age-appropriate curriculum.

Students attending lessons in the SEP follow the routine of explicit instruction (a school wide teaching and learning initiative) to deliver the Australian Curriculum and integrate technology through interactive whiteboards, computers and iPads.
